The formula
Yarn and other materials plus your hours at your hourly rate form the loaded cost. The formula solves backwards for a price that keeps your target margin after selling fees. The material/labour split shows where your price actually comes from.
Worked example
Yarn $12, other materials $2, 6h at $18/h = $108.00, packaging $1.50, overhead $1, waste 3%. Base cost = $124.50; waste-adjusted = $128.35. With a 6.5% fee and 30% margin, the recommended price = $202.60. Materials are about 6.9% of the price; labour about 53.3%.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I charge for crochet?⌄
A common cause of crochet underpricing is ignoring labour. Add up your yarn and materials, then multiply your hours by a real hourly rate. A 6-hour piece at $18/h already costs $108 in time alone before margin — that's why handmade crochet can't match factory prices.
Why is the material percentage so low?⌄
Because crochet is mostly time, not materials. Seeing the split helps you understand that raising your hourly rate (or working faster) moves the price far more than cheaper yarn does.
Should I charge by the hour or per item?⌄
Per item is easier for customers, but base it on real hours. Track your time on a few pieces to find an honest average, then price from there.
How do I price crochet for wholesale?⌄
Use the wholesale calculator after you have your unit cost — wholesale tiers discount off your retail price, so you need a solid retail price first.
